Sharks are one of the most beautiful fish in the sea, and have been in existence for millions of years. The sharks strength and ferocity make it a predator of the sea, but a shark is no match for the anglers on The Jawbreaker. Sharks can be found in oceans all over the world, but the Gulf of Mexico, off the coast of St. Petersburg and Tampa, are prime hunting grounds. At Jawbreaker Charters, we encourage our anglers to catch and release these beautiful creatures. The warmer months are the best time to go looking for sharks in our region, but it is not uncommon for a shark to steal our bait while grouper fishing in the deeper water during the winter months.
When fishing for sharks on our charter, we use chum, chum, chum and more chum - sharks love this stuff! Sharks love large bloody bait, but to catch one of these predators, you will need very heavy fishing gear. Our anglers are provided with heavy broomstick-like fishing rods, and a large open faced reel with at least 130lb. main line. This does not mean that you can’t hook a shark and bring it boat side with lighter tackle. It isn’t uncommon for our guests to catch a shark, both large and small, on any of our charters, not just shark fishing charters.
Just like on many of our other charters in the St. Petersburg, Tampa and Clearwater area, we usually catch other fish besides just sharks. You could expect to catch other species such as:
We get asked about this a lot at Jawbreaker Charters, but we have found that sharks love to eat and hunt during the day as much as they do at night. Most of our shark charters go out during the day because it allows us to catch other sought after species, in addition to sharks. We fish for sharks in various depth of waters and distance from shore. Many beach goers and vacationers do not like to hear this, but some of the bigger sharks can be found just off the shore line! Other species of sharks are found only in depths of 100 feet and beyond. Some of the most common sharks found in the Gulf of Mexico and surrounding Tampa Bay waters are:
The list goes on as there is no shortage of sharks off the coast of St. Petersburg, FL.
