Good Lord, just when you thought it was safe to come out from cover, this motley crew shows back up to wreak havoc on the Jawbreaker fishing vessel. Yes, I am talking about Jawbreaker company, made up of Dave Bowling and crew, these guys were ready for action-once again-on the pristine waters of the Gulf of Mexico.
Fishing in crystal clear water certainly can make things a challenge. I can't remember an April where the water has been so clear, I am talking top to bottom visibility in 60+ feet of water. So, with that being said, Grouper leaders-switch to fluorocarbon leader material=more hits, more fish. King fish rigs-use #2 and #3 wire along with the smallest tow and treble hooks you can get away with=more hits, more fish, light wire means more lost fish too, but hey-you can't catch em if you don't fool em first!
Anyway,I guess we made decent impression last year with a strong Grouper bite, and good times, to lure these guys back to St.Pete Beach for some more offshore fishing fun. This year we had 2 full days to put up with these guys...uh, I mean, 2 full days to spend with some really cool dudes. This time around was about the same as the last, with the exception of having to throw back big Gag Grouper after big Gag Grouper. At least the Red Groupers, Scamps and snappers were there for a well rounded bottom fishing experience. Throw in a few nice King fish in the 20# range each day and Bada Bing! It's a beautiful thing.
Needless to say, but I will anyway, Jawbreaker Co. had a repeat experience in good times, great memories and a decent catch to bring home for some good eats! Thanks again boys, we will be looking forward to July when Gags are back on the 'kill' list. Check out the crew from left to right Joel, John, Derrick, Dave and Eric. Thanks again guys and happy fishing. Capt.Dan
