Deep sea fishing in the Tampa area is about as good as it can get right now. Fishing for Grouper and Kingfish on the same charter trip is the normal routine this time of year for most charter fishing guides in Tampa and St.Petersburg beach.
With the King mackerel in full swing, it just takes the time and patience to catch live bait for the true 'smoker' kingfish. After last weekend's kingfish tournament, I figured the fish should still be biting in or around the same area, about 17 nautical miles from St.Pete beach. Well, I have to admit...I was right on! Our new friends James, Vicki and Scott(pictured above, left to right) found their share of Kingfish and Gag grouper on the first spot!
The kings were eating blue runners that we caught just off St.Pete beach. The grouper bite was a bit slow for a good part of the day, but we still managed to fool a few with both live pinfish and cut sardines and squid. Grouper fishing in Tampa Bay and the Gulf of Mexico is starting to move further offshore as the waters temps are reaching the mid-80's already. Bring live bait when you can and plenty of fresh water for the anglers on your boat. Florida fishing is getting hot...in many ways!
