Seeing Reds in Tampa Bay

A bit late on this Tampa Bay fishing report, but, better late than never, right? The past 3 weeks have been like a roller coaster ride in the fishing world...a really good roller coaster ride! Big Bull Reds were the hot topic prior to the cold fronts we have since experienced. And of course, we are now settling in to the Gag Grouper closure that went into effect on December 3rd.
Pulling out of Pass-a-grille on St.Pete Beach, it looked like a every Frigate bird in existence was onto something good just 2 miles offshore. We had to investigate, and as we approached the frenzy the water turned to copper. We were in a sea of giant bull Redfish, all in the 30-35 pound range, and they were hungry. Instant gratification is what I like to call it when every one of my charter clients catches, and releases, a 30 pound fish in just the first 30 minutes of the fishing charter. Nice! Check out Kayla and brother Frank with number 4 on the board. Tight work kids...oh, happy birthday to Frank, number 21!
Of course, we headed offshore for the rest of our 4-hour fishing charter and put some vittles in the ice box. Red and Gag Groupers were very cooperative, as well as various other reef fish, making for a nice pile of fillets to feast on. Another great day on the water with a fun and energetic crew, and another fresh Grouper dinner to look forward to. It really doesn't get any better. Happy fishing folks! Capt.Dan
