Unless you are a Tampa Bay fishing guide, or even an avid Kingfish angler-you have probably never witnessed the kind of sky-rocketing action that Alan Fairbanks and his 14-year-old son Chandler did on Monday's 4-hour fishing charter out of Pass-a-Grille. Even though this Father and Son fishing team, from Kansas, was staying on Clearwater Beach, they found one of Tampa Bay's best fishing charters just a few miles to the South, on beautiful St.Pete Beach.
A strong East wind, with gusts up to 20 knots, put the Jawbreaker fishing vessel just a mile from Blind's Pass where we could fish in comfort. Besides, no need to go offshore in the slop when the Kings are running. After loading up on live baits and leaving the pass, we did a u-turn...right for the beach. Upon our arrival I could already see that the bite was going to be strong. The mackerel were busting the surface in every direction, the Terns, Gulls and Gannets were on parade...and my stomach felt like I was getting ready to jump out of an airplane at 14,000 feet, with a parachute on of course. Well, we anchored up and let the chumming begin, and within 15 minutes we had our first cut-off. Damn! That's Kingfishing. We typically lose as many, or more, than we put in the boat-due to their lightning quick speeds, and a set of razor sharp teeth that can easily cut through the light steel wire we use as leader material. Anyway, after losing a few 'mystery' fish, we finally got one in the boat...and then another, and another and another. Check out Alan and Chandler with the end results of a double-header...nice Kings boys!
Besides catching their biggest fish(s) ever, the Fairbanks got to witness at least 5 big Kings going aerial right next to the boat...there's that skydiving feeling again. Man, until you have seen this action, up close and personal, you are just not complete...trust me! 4 Kings in the 15-22 pound range-on ice, several large Spanish mackerel and a boat-full of good times, that's what it's all about. Call Jawbreaker fishing charters now! Get in on the King fish action while it lasts...make yourself complete, and happy fishing! Capt.Dan
