Big sharks are on the menu in Tampa

Mama said there would be days like this. Just when you think the fishing in Tampa Bay is getting hot, and it is....the sharks invade! Even though the bite was a little bit slow on Wednesday, several big sharks made an appearance worth remembering. Bull sharks, Black-tip sharks, Spinner sharks, Hammerheads-their all starting to show up in serious numbers, and getting a whole fish to the boat is a real challenge right now.

After a late start, we headed right to the Egmont shipping channel for some hot action with the Kingfish and Bonitos, and anything else that would be willing to tighten a line for our new friends. As we approached the markers there were 2 other boats already hooked up. This was a good sign. Baits in the water, several short strikes and Bam!..a big Spinner shark hits and goes aerial, about 6 feet in the air!!!..Seeing this is worth the price of admission and our crew was instantly rewarded. It turns out that the other boats were both fighting big Bull sharks-that won the battle.

We did finally manage to boat a whole fish after a move to deeper, less shark infested water. Check out young Nick with his biggest fish ever...nice Bonito Nick! This fish wore the kid out and he literally slept the whole ride back to the dock. Bottom fishing produced some big Gag Grouper that were released, a few tasty snappers for the dinner table and everyone caught fish. Success.
